The Iran Nuclear Three-Step

Reading Zach's post about Iran just now made me think about another example of double talk among the Huffington Posters when it comes to the Iranian nuclear situation. Usually this is a case in which a number of HPers will make the following claims, but if you are perceptive you can find that a single user will contradict himself or herself, sometimes in the same thread.

First the Huffington Posters claim that Iran in fact is not making nuclear weapons at all:

Then they will claim that okay yes, Iran is making nuclear weapons but they are justified because they only want it for self-defense, even though it is forbidden under the non-proliferation treaty.

Finally they will claim that although Iran is justified in making nuclear weapons clandestinely because they need it for self-defense, Israel is not:

Is your head spinning yet? It can be quite fun to watch when this plays out on the threads.

  1. "If", in the second post, is a tiny, but very important word which nullifies your "Then they will claim that okay yes, Iran is making nuclear weapons but they are justified because they only want it for self-defense, even though it is forbidden under the non-proliferation treaty."
The final post, which, you say, claims that "Iran is justified in making nuclear weapons clandestinely because they need it for self-defense" does no such thing.

    Is YOUR head spinning?

  2. Iran is not really acting illegally. They can assemble all the elements to build a bomb under the NPT and then if they want to be a formal nuclear power, they can legally withdraw from the NPT if "supreme state interests" should require it. And who is going to stop them? No one.
